Eidos shoots the food, confirms Gauntlet for DS

Eidos and developer Backbone are bringing Gauntlet's food-shooting, poison-eating, death-avoiding action to the Nintendo DS later this year. Eidos describes the upcoming title as a "modern reworking" of the arcade classic, thankfully returning the series to its overhead roots rather than the forgettable 3D entries of recent years.

Gauntlet for the DS will once again reunite the series' iconic Elf, Warrior, Wizard, and Valkyrie, and include 40 maps across three different areas. What's more, as Gauntlet has always been been strongest when played in groups, this latest version will boast ranked 4-player co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, playable both wirelessly and over Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection. Just remember, shots do NOT hurt other players ... yet.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! The degree to which I love Gauntlet (including the 3D ones which weren't that bad) can not be expressed in words. I must have this game - please come out soon.

I too liked the 3D gauntlets, I think it was called Dark Legacy.

I loved playing those in the arcade back in the day. almost a preveiw of WOW....almost.

I think he was referring to 7 Sorrows, which was the worst gauntlet game ever created.

Dark Legacy and Legend were the best party games ever until rock band.

Hmm... I dunno though. Rock Band is pretty pricey for a party game. Wii Sports still seems to be the one to put on in front of all the "What the hell is a video game?" crowd and have it be a blast for 3-4 good hours. And for the videogame inclined, it tends to be Mario Party 8 (I know I know...) or, hell who am I kidding it's Wii Sports.

I think its obvious. Nintendo makes the best party games. Hell, the PS2 only had to two controller inputs.

Ever since getting an actual quest structure like Diablo or Untold Legends, I can't go back to Gauntlet. And I tried multiple times.

I had some good times with Gauntlet Legends for 64 and Dreamcast. The funniest part was the two character specials. "Dwarf! Get on my back!"

Wait... Eidos? I thought Midway owned the series, after the acquisition (and closing) of Atari Games (not to be confused with Atari, Inc.).

I can still remember playing gauntlet on GB, not knowing that the game never really ends, so I kept playing and playing until the batteries ran out!
